What’s Free in the Epic Games Store This Week?

Looking for something new after running out of games to play? Or are you someone who will never turn down free stuff? There’s no shame in that, especially when you consider the threat of tariffs looming and video game prices rising. It makes sense why you would want to avoid spending a ton money on games when and where you could. If that sounds like you, then you’re in luck, because we’ve got just the place for you to check out — the Epic Games Store.

After Epic capitalized on the massive success of its battle royale game Fortnite, it launched its very own store in 2019. It only continues to grow and thrive, with Epic partnering with multiple top brands like Marvel, Star Wars and DC as well as celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. Epic built its store to take on Valve’s Steam, but what makes it really special is that, unlike Steam, it gives away free games every week, including charming indie titles and big blockbuster AAA hits.

Begin by creating a free Epic Games account. After signing up, visit the free games section on the Epic Games Store each Thursday at 8 a.m. PT (11 a.m ET, 4 p.m BST) to discover weekly picks that feature both classic and new games.

Each week will be different, but you’re guaranteed to at least get one free game. Of course, there may be some breaks during holidays, but we’ll keep you updated about that if that ends up being the case. Sometimes, you may even get more than a couple of games per week if there’s a special occasion, such as the lead-up to Christmas, where games are released daily. And guess what the best part is? You can keep the game you download forever.

We have bad news for console gamers: The Epic Games Store is only for PC, so people who play on a console can’t access weekly free games. It also offers games for Mac, but some may not be compatible. Always check before downloading.

What’s the new free game in the Epic Games Store this week? (July 17 to July 24)

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI Platinum Edition

If you ask anyone to name a great game franchise, we’re pretty sure that someone will mention Sid Meier’s Civilization. It’s not hard to see why, particularly if you’re someone who enjoys the chance to shape history and the cultures of the past in a meaningful way while partaking in strategic gameplay reminiscent of games like Age of Empires.

Firaxis Games/Epic Games Store

In Civilization VI, you become the leader of a culture from across history. You have to expand your civilization’s reach across the map by building cities, waging wars and unlocking research to advance your civilization into a new age. Though you can play the game by yourself, Civilization VI also offers multiplayer, which lets you compete with friends and others across the world. Who will be the better leader? Who will history remember? Only time will tell.

You can get Civilization VI as well as its six DLC packs and two expansions. That’s more than 100 hours of content, so if you’re someone who enjoys depth and richness, this is the perfect game for you.

Usually $80, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI Platinum Edition is available for free via the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, it has a review of 4.7 stars out of 5. Customers particularly enjoy the game’s commitment to educating players about history, as well as its easy-to-understand controls and gameplay.

What will be free in the Epic Games Store next week? (July 24 to July 31)

Legion TD 2

If your idea of a good time is defending your HQ and other areas from wave after wave of enemies, then you’ll want to sit up and pay attention to AutoAttack Games’ multiplayer and single-player tower defense game: Legion TD 2.

AutoAttack Games

Possible to play in single player and multiplayer, players take control of a sizeable force that they can upgrade and train to expand and strengthen to defend their king and base. With endless waves of foes to hold off and over 100 unique fighters to choose from, players can pick and choose how they choose to combat the tides of battle, with each round offering new and brutal ways and war strategies from the enemy to overcome. With each round being so different, players will need to figure out the best way to deal with whatever the foe throws at them.

As we’ve said before, you can also play the game as a single-player campaign, but you’ll need an internet connection to do so. With this option, you can practice against the legions of enemies coming your way before you jump into multiplayer, with 2v2 and 4v4 matchmade games.

Usually $16, Legion TD 2 will be available for free via the Epic Games Store next week. At the time of writing, a review score is not available. However, on rival storefront Steam, its overall rating is ‘Very Positive’, with its most recent score being ‘Mostly Positive’.
